- The first-ever complete LP collection of Ignaz Friedman's recordings has been much sought after by collectors and admired by critics since it's original LP release in 1985. The 'Moonlight' Sonata, Chopin mazurkas and Songs without Words of Mendelssohn are classics of the gramophone, which now speak to a new generation of listeners more clearly than ever before.Previously released on vinyl - [r14466623]
While using the "Compact Disc Digital Audio"-logo and speaking of "first CD release", this is a CD-R set.
This extensive CD edition "Ignaz Friedman: Sämtliche Aufnahmen 1923-1941" presents all surviving recordings the legendary Polish-Jewish pianist made during the golden age of 78-rpm discs. Across these historic sessions you experience Friedman's highly personal, songful tone, his unmatched cantabile and the flexible rubato that made him one of the most admired interpreters of late-Romantic piano music. The set focuses above all on the core of his repertoire - Chopin, Liszt and other Romantic masters - documented in performances that combine poetic freedom with an iron sense of structure. Carefully transferred and restored from original sources, these recordings offer a vivid impression of how piano playing sounded in the first half of the 20th century, and are an essential reference for collectors, pianists and anyone interested in performance history.
Ignaz Friedman (1882-1948) was regarded during his lifetime as one of the supreme Chopin players of his generation and a central figure among the great Romantic virtuosos. Born near Kraków and trained in Vienna, he quickly developed an international concert career, praised for his warm, orchestral sonority, refined pedalling and an improvisatory spontaneity that never lost sight of the musical line. His recordings of Chopin mazurkas, nocturnes and waltzes, as well as works by Liszt and Schumann, have long been singled out by critics and musicians as benchmarks of expressive pianism. Although his concert activity was curtailed in his later years, the discs he left from 1923-1941 preserve the artistry that made him a legend among contemporaries and later generations alike.
The label Danacord, founded in Denmark, has built a strong reputation among classical collectors for its carefully curated reissues and its dedication to historically important recordings, particularly from the Nordic and European tradition. Known for thorough documentation and a respectful approach to audio restoration, Danacord editions often bring long-unavailable archive material back to life while maintaining the character of the original sound. With this Friedman collection, the label once again underlines its role as a specialist in high-quality historical releases, aimed at listeners who value depth, context and authenticity in recorded music.
This CD release is ideal for pianophiles, students of interpretation and lovers of Romantic keyboard music who wish to encounter Ignaz Friedman not as a distant name from history books, but as a living, breathing artist at the keyboard. The compilation traces his recorded legacy over nearly two decades, allowing you to follow changes in repertoire, tempo choices and expressive approach, and to immerse yourself in a style of piano playing that has largely disappeared from modern concert life. | | | Manufacturer No.: |
