Description:
This CD presents Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber's celebrated "Rosary Sonatas" (Rosenkranz-Sonaten), performed by violinist Leila Schayegh together with the ensemble La Centifolia. Composed in the 17th century and long regarded as one of the most challenging and spiritually profound cycles for violin, these sonatas lead the listener through the mysteries of the rosary, blending intense expressiveness with daring virtuosity and inventive use of scordatura tuning. The recording highlights both the meditative, almost mystical dimension of Biber's music and its theatrical, highly emotional contrasts, from inward prayer-like movements to dazzling, dance-like passages.
Leila Schayegh, a leading specialist in historical performance practice, plays on period instruments and places great emphasis on rhetorical phrasing, color, and detailed articulation. Together with La Centifolia, she shapes Biber's musical images with clarity and refinement, letting each mystery develop its own sonic world. The ensemble's subtle continuo work and rich palette of timbres provide a warm and flexible foundation for the violin, ensuring that even the densest polyphonic textures remain transparent and engaging. The result is an interpretation that is both historically informed and vividly communicative, ideal for listeners who want to discover or rediscover the Rosary Sonatas in depth.
Leila Schayegh has established herself internationally as one of the foremost baroque violinists of her generation, with acclaimed recordings of core 17th- and 18th-century repertoire. Her projects often focus on complete cycles and composer portraits, which has earned her a reputation for intellectual coherence and expressive intensity in long-form programs. Performances at leading early music festivals and collaborations with prominent period ensembles have further strengthened her profile in the early music scene.
La Centifolia is a flexible period-instrument ensemble dedicated to baroque and early classical repertoire, known for its stylistic sensitivity and chamber-musical approach. Their work places particular value on historically informed technique, ornamentation, and sound aesthetics, always in the service of rhetorical clarity and emotional directness. In this Biber project, the ensemble's close musical dialogue with the soloist creates a sense of intimacy and spiritual concentration that suits the devotional character of the cycle.
