"The Maggot & The Bootlicker" is a double LP bringing together two of the Melvins' most distinctive and adventurous albums in one striking edition. "The Maggot" shows the band at their heaviest and most oppressive: a torrent of thick, downtuned riffs, pounding drums and suffocating atmospheres, with songs that bleed into each other to create an almost suite-like listening experience. In contrast, "The Bootlicker" explores the Melvins' more restrained and experimental side, with sparse arrangements, hypnotic grooves and an emphasis on vocals, tension and subtle dynamics. The juxtaposition of these two albums turns the LP into a deep dive into the band's creative universe, from punishing sludge and noise-rock to oblique, art-rock-like explorations that reward repeated listening and reveal new details with every spin.
The Melvins are widely regarded as one of the most influential bands operating at the crossroads of sludge, grunge, punk and experimental rock. Since the 1980s, their slow, crushing guitar sound, unconventional time signatures and fearless approach to songwriting have inspired countless heavy, alternative and underground acts. They are often cited as early pioneers of the Seattle sound and as a crucial influence on what would later be known as grunge, all while maintaining a fiercely independent ethos. Over the decades, the band has built a legendary reputation for their prolific output, relentless touring and constant reinvention, which has earned them enduring respect among critics, fellow musicians and a devoted global fanbase.
This LP edition is released by Pias/Ipeca, a partnership that stands for high-quality independent music releases. Pias (Play It Again Sam) is one of Europe's leading independent music companies, renowned for its long-term collaborations with visionary artists and labels and its commitment to artistic freedom and careful catalog curation. The Ipecac-related context surrounding the Melvins is known for championing unconventional, genre-defying music that sits firmly outside the mainstream. Together, Pias and Ipeca provide a strong platform for "The Maggot & The Bootlicker," ensuring that the vinyl not only sounds powerful, but is also manufactured and presented to a standard that meets the expectations of collectors and fans - from dependable pressing quality to a presentation that reflects the bold, experimental spirit of this double album.
