 | | Description: | Thatīll Flat Git It! Vol. 52 by Various Artists, released 26 December 2025, includes the following tracks: "Hot Lips Baby", "Come On Letīs Go", "I Feel So Bad", "Mean Mean Woman" and more.
This version of Thatīll Flat Git It! Vol. 52 comes as a 1xCD. - That'll Flat Git It! Vol. 52: Rockabilly & Rock 'n' Roll From The Vaults Of Mar Vel' & Glenn Records Mar Vel' and Glenn Records, labels run by Harry Glenn from 1949 in Hammond, northern Indiana, not far from Chicago, specializing in country and rockabilly. In the 1950s and early '60s, Glenn produced a selection of high quality rockabilly and R'n'R recordings. Among his most famous artists were Jack Bradshaw and Bobby Sisco. For the 52nd edition in our label based CD series 'That'll Flat... Git It!', producer Nico Feuerbach has compiled the very best tracks from the extensive catalogs of Mar Vel' and Glenn. Our Chicago music expert Bill Dahl wrote the detailed liner notes for the illustrated booklet. We have carefully remastered the historic recordings from the best available sources according to Bear Family standards. Although the town was situated just east of the Illinois state line in Indiana, Hammond's taste in music was well removed from that of nearby Chicago. Hammond served as homebase for a platoon of country and rockabilly performers, and Harry Glenn was right there to document it all on from 1949 on with his feisty Mar Vel' and Glenn labels. His diskery's enduring slogan "Hits of Tomorrow Recorded Today" may have been a tad ambitious, but Bear Family's latest entry in it's 'That'll Flat... Git It!' series underscores it's importance as Glenn released more than his share of classic rockabilly and rock and roll. This is raw boned juke joint music at it's finest, served up by local performers working the rough blue collar barrooms of Hammond and Calumet City, Illinois and laying it down in the studio just the way they did every night no frills and plenty of thrills. Jack Bradshaw and Bobby Sisco were Harry's best known performers, both solidly country rooted but obviously adept at a little rocking now and then, and Harry must have harbored high hopes for Chuck Dallis, Billy Nix, and Billy Hall they each cut plenty of great early '60s rock and roll for him. A few years before that, Bob Burton, Harry Carter (aka The Rock N Roll Apache), and Harold Allen were turning out first class rockabilly singles, while Herbie Duncan's insane freeform 1958 rant Hot Lips Baby was in a class all it's own. Even into the mid '60s, Harry was still going strong with Carl Newman, Slim O'Mary and The Southerneers, and The Law Brothers' twangy cover of George Jones' frothy Root Beer. Thanks to Harry Glenn, Hammond, Indiana was an unlikely country, rockabilly, and rock and roll recording hotbed. This set offers the hottest sides in his sizable catalog!Track 2 credited to Bill Hall on sleeve, and to Billy Hall in booklet.
Co-writer track 5 credited as "Harwig" in booklet header, but as "Varwig" in booklet text, as well as on original release [r10494349] (image)."That'll Flat Git It! Vol. 52 - Mar-Vel' and Glenn" on CD is a meticulously curated compilation that dives deep into the raw, driving sound of 1950s rockabilly and early rock 'n' roll. Dedicated to the legendary Mar-Vel' and Glenn labels, this volume focuses on rare sides, collector's favorites, and hard-to-find cuts that capture the unpolished energy of the formative rock 'n' roll years. Expect twanging guitars, slapping upright bass, echo-laden vocals, and an infectious backbeat, all presented in top audio quality from carefully remastered sources. Rather than centering on a single star, the CD celebrates a broad stylistic spectrum: from wild, uptempo rockabilly stompers and hillbilly bop to early rock 'n' roll shouters and more melodic, country-tinged numbers--showcasing how diverse these small but influential labels really were.
As part of the established "That'll Flat Git It!" series, Volume 52 continues the line's reputation for serious archival depth and musical coherence. The track selection is designed not just for casual listening but for fans and collectors who want to trace how regional studio scenes and small imprints helped shape the rockabilly sound. Each song has been chosen to illustrate a particular nuance of the style: raw garage-like workouts, tight band arrangements, vocal harmonies, and the unmistakable feel of live-in-the-studio spontaneity. The CD often comes with an extensive booklet (where available) featuring background information on the labels, session details when documented, and context for how these sides fit into the broader history of 1950s American roots music. This makes the release equally suitable as a thrilling listening experience and as a compact historical overview of the Mar-Vel' and Glenn catalogs.
