Description:Owl Song by Ambrose Akinmusire, released 15 December 2023, includes the following tracks: "Flux Fuelings", "Grace", "Mr. Riley" and more. This version of Owl Song comes as a 1xCD. -
Composer and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire makes his Nonesuch Records debut with Owl Song on December 15, 2023. The album features a trio with two musicians Akinmusire has long admired, guitarist Bill Frisell and drummer Herlin Riley."This is my reaction to being assaulted by information, " Akinmusire says of Owl Song. "This record is me wanting to create a safe space. Part of the challenge was: Can I create something that's oriented around open space, the way some of the records I love the most do?"He says of his collaborators, "I had a feeling of wanting to record with Bill from the first time we played-it was a duo performance, very little rehearsal. We just played through some of my songs, and it worked. One of Bill's special gifts is the ability to shape a piece he's just heard for the first time. He seems to know what the music wants before the first note."With Herlin, his commitment to beauty you can find in the groove. I never like to tell musicians too much about what I'm going for, because it should be about what these particular people bring... I said, 'I know you're the right person for this because of the way you approach the groove.' And, of course, what he did is just beautiful." He continues, "Also, I wanted to put people together who didn't seem like they would go together... and it turns out they haven't played a lot. So, it was cross generational, cross subgenre, cross whatever."
"Owl Song" is an atmospheric and deeply introspective jazz album on CD by trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire, released on the renowned label Nonesuch. Known for his poetic, searching approach to sound, Akinmusire uses this project to explore silence, space, and melody with rare sensitivity. The music feels both intimate and expansive: sparse textures, open harmonies and carefully placed notes create the impression of a nocturnal conversation, as if each piece were a quiet reflection captured in sound. Listeners can expect subtle dynamics rather than showmanship, with slow-burning emotional arcs that reward careful, repeated listening.

Ambrose Akinmusire is considered one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary jazz trumpet. He first came to wider attention through highly acclaimed albums on leading jazz labels and through collaborations with some of the most respected artists in modern jazz and creative music. Over the years he has been praised for his ability to combine advanced harmonic language, strong melodic instincts, and a deep sense of narrative within his compositions. His work frequently appears on year-end critics' lists and has earned him a reputation as an artist who pushes the boundaries of the genre while remaining rooted in its tradition.

"Owl Song" fits seamlessly into this artistic trajectory. The album emphasizes mood and storytelling over pure virtuosity, with pieces that often unfold slowly and organically. It is particularly suited to listeners who appreciate contemporary jazz that is subtle, lyrical, and rich in atmosphere rather than driven by rapid tempos or dense arrangements. The CD format underlines the album's character as a complete, coherent listening experience, inviting the audience to follow its arc from the first track to the last without distraction.

Nonesuch, the manufacturer and label behind this release, is known for its carefully curated catalog that spans contemporary classical music, jazz, world music, and innovative singer-songwriters. Since its early days, Nonesuch has built a reputation for high production values, artistic independence, and long-term relationships with forward-thinking musicians. Many of its releases are regarded as reference recordings in their respective fields, and the label has often been associated with projects that challenge genre boundaries. With "Owl Song," Nonesuch continues its tradition of presenting artistically ambitious works that invite deep listening rather than casual consumption.
