 | | Description: | Del Shannon was, without doubt, one of the most gifted and distinctive of musical talents to emerge in the immediate pre-â??British Invasionâ?? era of American Pop. His was a talent that travelled well â?? indeed, his UK and European fanbase proved far more loyal and his success in those territories of greater longevity than in his native USA. Moreover, he was also much admired by successive generations of musicians, including the likes of George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young. His songs, more often than not, essayed a bleak world of doomed romance, lovelorn disenchantment and existential gloom. Paradoxically, of course, those themes were frequently juxtaposed to surprisingly upbeat and bright-sounding melodies. - Two CD collection. Del Shannon was, without doubt, one of the most gifted and distinctive of musical talents to emerge in the immediate pre-'British Invasion' era of American Pop. His was a talent that travelled well - indeed, his UK and European fanbase proved far more loyal and his success in those territories of greater longevity than in his native USA. His songs, more often than not, essayed a bleak world of doomed romance, lovelorn disenchantment and existential gloom. Paradoxically, of course, those themes were frequently juxtaposed to surprisingly upbeat and bright-sounding melodies. This 61 track set contains an overview of the entirety of Del Shannon's career, from his hits in the early 60s, via his mid-60s recordings with Andrew Loog Oldham and Jimmy Page, to his 80s recordings with Tom Petty and Mike Campbell, and Jeff Lynne. The booklet features photos and extensive annotation by Alan Robinson."Handy Man: The Best Of (2CD-Digipak)" is an extensive career-spanning compilation on CD that celebrates the timeless legacy of Del Shannon, one of the most distinctive voices of early rock 'n' roll and pop. Spread across two carefully curated discs and presented in an attractive digipak, this collection brings together a broad selection of his most important recordings, from his era-defining early hits through later highlights that showcase his expressive vocals, melodic flair and emotionally charged songwriting. With a focus on sound quality and a thoughtfully arranged track sequence, the set is ideal both for long-time fans who want a compact yet rich overview and for newcomers discovering Shannon's work in depth for the first time. The 2CD format invites you to immerse yourself in his classic sound--full of echo-laden guitars, dramatic arrangements and unforgettable hooks--while the digipak packaging offers a more premium, collector-friendly presentation than a standard jewel case.
Del Shannon occupies a special place in music history as one of the early 1960s artists who helped shape the bridge between rock 'n' roll, pop and later singer-songwriter styles. Internationally, he is best remembered for his haunting, soaring hits and his instantly recognizable vocal style, which set him apart from many of his contemporaries. Over his career he enjoyed chart success on both sides of the Atlantic and influenced later generations of musicians who admired the emotional intensity and melodic strength of his songs. This compilation underlines how versatile he was: from driving uptempo rockers to more reflective, atmospheric tracks that reveal his strengths as both performer and songwriter. A brief artist bio is incomplete without noting that his biggest successes became staples of radio playlists and oldies formats worldwide, ensuring that his name remains firmly anchored in the history of popular music.
The release comes from Demon / Edsel, a respected UK-based catalogue specialist known for lovingly produced reissues, anthologies and best-of collections. The label has built a strong reputation among collectors and music lovers for paying attention to details such as track selection, mastering quality and packaging design. With projects like this Del Shannon overview, Demon / Edsel often aims to present an artist's work in a way that is both accessible and archival: accessible, because the compilations are clearly structured and listener-friendly; archival, because they often pull together key recordings in a coherent, well-researched form. The digipak format, in particular, is a hallmark of their approach, frequently including artwork and presentation that appeal to fans who value physical music editions as objects to keep and revisit. "Handy Man: The Best Of (2CD-Digipak)" fits perfectly into this philosophy, offering a high-quality gateway into Del Shannon's catalogue with the care and respect his music deserves.
For anyone with an interest in classic pop and early rock history, this 2CD set is a compelling document: a substantial, handsomely packaged overview that highlights the depth of Del Shannon's work beyond the hits everyone knows. It is suited both to dedicated collectors looking for a well-presented best-of and to new listeners in search of an authoritative starting point that captures the atmosphere, drama and melodic richness that made Del Shannon a standout figure of his era. | | | Cover: |
