 | | Description: | Rimsky-Korsakov's The Golden Cockerel (Le Coq d'or) is based on a Pushkin folk tale, but the opera's Orientalism, comedy and sultry elements go far beyond it's original influence. The composer saw in the story of a Tsar, punished for his cowardice and despotism, an opportunity to employ satire to condemn Russia's autocratic ruler, Nicholas II. This new production premiered in May 2021 and was staged by the Australian director, Barrie Kosky, a specialist in Russian opera. Critics hailed the 'glorious' singing of Dmitry Ulyanov and the 'exquisite' performance of Nina Minasyan calling the event 'a triumphant evening for all concerned' (Bachtrack. Com)."The Golden Cockerel" on Blu-ray by NAXOS Audiovisual presents Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's final opera in a high-quality video production that captures both its musical refinement and its biting satirical edge. This Blu-ray edition offers an immersive experience of the fantastical tale of a tsar whose fate is sealed by a prophetic golden cockerel, combining dazzling orchestral colors with vivid theatrical staging. The production showcases the opulent score, sharply drawn characters and the work's unique mix of fairy-tale fantasy and political allegory, all transferred in detailed high definition with clear, dynamic sound that highlights the shimmering orchestration and expressive vocal writing. Designed both for seasoned opera lovers and newcomers, this release allows viewers to appreciate the work's dramatic pacing, choral scenes and virtuosic solo parts through careful camera work and an engaging stage conception. NAXOS Audiovisual is known for making major operatic and orchestral works broadly accessible through well-produced, fairly priced releases, often documenting important international productions and preserving high-calibre performances in permanent form. As part of the wider Naxos group, the label has established a strong reputation for catalog depth and educational value, frequently including productions from acclaimed opera houses and ensembles, and contributing significantly to the video documentation of the classical repertoire. The cast typically gathers experienced opera singers with strong credentials in Russian and late-Romantic repertoire, artists who have appeared at respected European opera houses and festivals and who bring stylistic authority and dramatic conviction to their roles. The conductor is generally chosen from the ranks of recognized specialists in Russian opera and orchestral color, known for bringing clarity to Rimsky-Korsakov's intricate textures and for balancing the brilliance of the orchestra with the demands of the singers. The stage direction is entrusted to a director with a solid track record in narrative music theatre, someone whose previous work often includes visually imaginative yet musically respectful productions of classic operas. Other key contributors commonly include an experienced chorus master, responsible for the precision and impact of the many choral scenes, and a design team with notable work in opera staging, whose sets and costumes emphasize the fairy-tale atmosphere while underlining the opera's underlying satire. | | | Actors: |
