Henryk Szeryng (Warschau, 22. September 1918 - Kassel, 3. März 1988)
[...] Ich wurde auf Szeryng aufmerksam, als er 1987 in Atlanta mit Louis Lane die nordamerikanische Erstaufführung des Konzerts von Reynaldo Hahn, dem französischen Meister der Belle Epoque, aus dem Jahr 1927 spielte. "Ah ja", behauptet Szeryng, "Reynaldo Hahn, der Pariser unter den Parisern, obwohl er in Caracas als Sohn deutscher Eltern geboren wurde. Es gibt sogar eine Stra�e in Caracas, die nach ihm benannt ist. Ich erinnere mich an eine Begegnung mit ihm, und obwohl er als Pianist ausgebildet war, hatte er ein natürliches Gespür für die Violine. Manche bevorzugen seine Violinsonate. Das Konzert ist zwar veröffentlicht, aber aus irgendeinem Grund spielt es niemand. Der erste Satz ist für mich der beste und kompakteste und eignet sich hervorragend als Paradestück. Der zweite Satz basiert auf einem Lied aus Tunis - absolut echt - und das Finale singt in einem typischen Operettenstil. Es beginnt wie eine Fortsetzung des zweiten Satzes und hat einen enormen Witz und Charme. Und natürlich ist es eine Herausforderung." (Gary Lemco) - .. "Ah, yes", asserts Szeryng, "Reynaldo Hahn, the most Parisian of all Parisians, even though he was born in Caracas of German parents. There is even a street in Caracas named for him. I remember meeting him; and even though he was trained as a pianist, he had a natural sense of the violin. Some favor his Violin Sonata. The Concerto is published, but for some reason nobody plays it. The first movement for me is the best and most compact and makes a natural display piece. The second movement is based on a song from Tunis - absolutely genuine- and the finale sings in a typical operetta style.
