Here she joins the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Edward Gardner for a powerful album of orchestral songs, coupling Brittenâ??s Les Illuminations and Four French Songs with a selection of Canteloubeâ??s inimitable Songs of the Auvergne. Performed by soprano Mari Eriksmoen with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Edward Gardner, the recording offers both audiophile sound (on SACD) and conventional CD playback, making it ideal for discerning listeners and everyday music lovers alike. The French-language song cycle "Les Illuminations", based on the visionary poetry of Arthur Rimbaud, is presented in a reading that balances crystalline clarity of text with a highly atmospheric orchestral palette. In the contrasting "Chants d'Auvergne", Canteloube's arrangements of traditional Auvergnat folksongs unfold in warm, pastoral colors, bringing out both the rustic charm and the refined craftsmanship of these much-loved miniatures. The carefully curated selection highlights the stylistic range of early-to-mid-20th-century vocal orchestral repertoire, moving between impressionistic shimmer, folk-inspired lyricism and expressive modern tonal language.
Mari Eriksmoen has established herself as one of the most interesting lyric sopranos of her generation, known for her luminous timbre, agile technique and stylistic versatility. She has appeared with leading European opera houses and orchestras in a wide-ranging repertoire that spans Baroque roles, Classical heroines and 20th-century works, and she is particularly admired for her idiomatic French diction and engaging stage presence. Under the baton of Edward Gardner, a conductor widely respected for his work in both opera and symphonic repertoire and for his long-standing collaboration with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the performances are shaped with a keen sense of color, rhythm and narrative momentum. The Bergen Philharmonic brings its characteristic transparency and refinement to Britten's sharply etched textures and to the lush, folk-inflected sound world of Canteloube.
