Akl 21 / Works By Josquin Desprez |
 | | Description: | Josquin The Undead: Laments, Deplorations And Dances Of Death by Graindelavoix, released 1 October 2021.
This version of Josquin The Undead: Laments, Deplorations And Dances Of Death comes as a 1xCD. - AKL 21 / WORKS BY JOSQUIN DESPREZBjörn Schmelzer and his ensemble provide their special vision in this Josquin Desprez anniversary. With the conviction that Josquin, during his late years, produced works in sight of his own death, Graindelavoix renders compositions included in Tielman Susato's 1545 Antwerp print (Septiesme livre de chansons, published 24 years after the composer's life ended). With an all-male vocal ensemble and a subtle instrumental accompaniment, Graindelavoix again goes beyond all standards and presents another ground-breaking interpretation of well-known repertoire. Added to Josquin's compositions are three laments for his own death, written by Gombert, Vinders and Appenzeller. Gombert's deploration Musae Jovis is one of his most breathtaking compositions, finishing with an exceptional dance ā l'antique in which subterranean, terrestrial and heavenly elements indulge together praising the undead composer Josquin.Running Time: 01:18:09"Josquin the Undead" is an adventurous CD project by Björn Schmelzer and his vocal ensemble Graindelavoix, released on the specialist early-music label Glossa. Rooted in the music of Renaissance master Josquin Desprez, the recording explores how his works seem to "return from the dead" in new interpretations, fragmentations and resonances. Rather than presenting a smooth, idealized sound, Graindelavoix focuses on the cracks, frictions and expressive edges of late-medieval polyphony, highlighting how this music still speaks directly to a contemporary audience. Dense vocal textures, daring tempos and a strong sense of drama make this album as much a sonic experience as a musicological reflection on memory, loss and survival.
The program concentrates on works by or associated with Josquin, set in a way that emphasizes vocal individuality, timbral contrast and a physical, almost tactile presence of the voices. Instead of treating the repertoire as a distant museum object, the ensemble lets the lines breathe, bend and rub against each other, evoking the feeling of ancient ghosts haunting the present. Carefully shaped acoustics and an intense recording perspective add to the immersive character of the album, inviting listeners to enter a world where early polyphony and experimental performance practice meet.
Björn Schmelzer, founder and artistic director of Graindelavoix, is known for his distinctive, sometimes radical approach to early music, in which historical research, anthropology and a strong theatrical sense are tightly interwoven. With Graindelavoix he has built an international reputation for trailblazing recordings and performances of late-medieval and Renaissance repertoire, often focusing on neglected sources and unconventional interpretative angles. Previous projects with the ensemble have been widely discussed for their bold sound, emotional intensity and refusal to treat early music as merely decorative or "pure".
Graindelavoix itself has become one of the most recognizable names on the European early-music scene. The ensemble's work has been praised in the specialist press for its individuality, depth of concept and ability to make complex polyphony feel urgent and alive. Their collaborations with Glossa have produced a series of albums that challenge listening habits and expand the perceived possibilities of historical performance.
Glossa, the label behind this release, is one of Europe's leading independent imprints for early and classical music. Based in Spain, it is renowned for high-quality productions, carefully conceived booklets and a catalog that combines scholarly seriousness with artistic risk-taking. Glossa has long cultivated partnerships with outstanding ensembles and directors in the field of early music, supporting ambitious projects that might be too specialized for mainstream labels. With "Josquin the Undead", the label once again underlines its commitment to distinctive artistic voices and to recordings that shed new light on the repertoire. | | | Manufacturer No.: |
