 | | Description: | Bryars: A Native Hill by Crossing, released 25 June 2021, includes the following tracks: "iii. Sea Level", "v. The Road", "vii. Questions", "ix. The Hill" and more.
This version of Bryars: A Native Hill comes as a 1xCD. - Navona Records presents A NATIVE HILL from Philadelphia's professional chamber choir, The Crossing. This monumental unaccompanied work is the result of a collaboration with composer Gavin Bryars, whose previous work for The Crossing won them their first of two recent Grammy awards. With intimate knowledge of the individual voices and art of each singer, Bryars composed A NATIVE HILL to capitalize on the group's unique sound, personality, and esprit de corps. A NATIVE HILL is based on American author and environmentalist Wendell Berry's 1968 essay of the same name, which examines bucolic elements of rural life, suffused with deeper metaphysical and political implications. The new album is full of rich, complex vocal textures, dense chromatic clusters, and moments of profound simplicity, offering an opportunity to reflect on life's timeless questions."Native Hill" is an audio CD release on the Navona label featuring music by composer Gavin Bryars, realized in collaboration with The Crossing under the direction of conductor Donald Nally. Rooted in contemporary choral music, the album presents richly textured vocal writing, meditative harmonic landscapes, and a subtle blend of modern sonorities with timeless spiritual and poetic resonance. The works on this disc are characterized by slow-burning intensity, long lyrical lines, and a precise sense of ensemble balance that allows every voice to emerge clearly within the overall sonic tapestry. Listeners encounter a program that invites deep, focused listening: the music unfolds gradually, revealing shifting layers of color, gently evolving harmonies, and a refined interplay between individual voices and the choir as a whole. As a result, "Native Hill" bridges the worlds of contemporary classical composition and the centuries-old tradition of choral music, making it equally appealing to new-music enthusiasts and lovers of sacred or contemplative vocal repertoire.
Gavin Bryars is internationally regarded as one of the major voices in contemporary music, known for his distinctive blend of minimalism, lyrical expressivity, and conceptual clarity. Over the course of his career, he has created seminal works for both instrumental and vocal forces and collaborated with leading ensembles, festivals, and institutions around the world. His choral writing in particular has gained recognition for its emotional depth, architectural control, and highly personal harmonic language, which together give his music an unmistakable identity. The Crossing, conducted by Donald Nally, has emerged as one of the most acclaimed professional choirs specializing in new and recent music. Renowned for its technical precision, clarity of diction, and fearless programming, the ensemble has championed contemporary composers and contributed substantially to the expansion of the modern choral repertoire. Under Nally's leadership, The Crossing has premiered a large number of works and earned widespread critical praise for its recordings and concerts.
