 | | Description: | Hidden Treasure: Hans Gal's Unpublished Lieder by Christian Immler, released 1 January 2020.
This version of Hidden Treasure: Hans Gal's Unpublished Lieder comes as a 1xSuper Audio. - .. HANS GAL'S UNPUBLISHED LIEDERGrowing up in Vienna, with it's great Lied tradition, Hans Gál had written about 100 songs before leaving secondary school. He later destroyed them, along with all his other works composed prior to 1910, but between 1910 and 1921 he wrote many more. Except for the five songs of Op. 33, these were never published, and Gál himself would later refer to them as 'laid aside'. Many of these songs were publicly performed at the time, however, often with the composer at the piano. Through the initiative of Christian Immler and Helmut Deutsch, 26 of the 'laid-aside' songs are now being made available to a modern audience. A labor of love for the performers, the project has had the support of the composer's family - in fact the recording was produced by Hans Gál's grandson, Simon Fox-Gál. The songs provide a missing link in Gál's creative development, and show him engaging with a wide variety of poets, extending back from the twelfth-century (Walther von der Vogelweide) to contemporaries, such as Hermann Hesse and Richard Dehmel, by way of the classics (Heine, Mörike). Reflecting a taste for the exotic which was fashionable at the time, the selection also includes settings of poems by Rabindranath Tagore. The performers close their recital with the Op. 33 set, the only songs that Hans Gál did publish during his long career."Hidden Treasures" (SACD+CD) by Gal / Immler / Deutsch is an audiophile vocal recital that brings rarely performed art songs and chamber works into the spotlight, revealing true musical gems otherwise overshadowed by the standard repertoire. The hybrid SACD+CD format offers both high-resolution multichannel sound and a standard CD layer, ensuring that the warmth, nuance and dynamic range of voice and piano are reproduced with exceptional clarity on any system. Listeners are invited into an intimate, almost salon-like atmosphere, where subtle shadings of text and tone colour become clearly audible and the emotional range of the programme fully unfolds. The album's concept centres on discovery: songs that are stylistically rooted in the great European art-song tradition yet seldom heard in concert halls or on recordings. The selection balances lyrical intimacy, dramatic flair and refined craftsmanship, inviting repeated listening and rewarding close attention to detail. Carefully sequenced, the programme moves organically between introspective miniatures and more expansive, theatrically charged numbers, always maintaining a coherent musical narrative. Gal and Immler, as vocal partners, offer a finely tuned interplay of timbres and phrasing, supported by Deutsch's idiomatic and text-sensitive piano playing. Their interpretative approach focuses on clarity of diction, natural speech-rhythm and long-breathed musical lines, allowing the poetry to unfold without affectation while still delivering a high level of expressive intensity. Together, they illuminate the structural sophistication and emotional depth of each piece, making even unfamiliar repertoire immediately engaging. The production values reflect Bis's longstanding reputation in the classical world: transparent sonics, natural acoustics and a tasteful, unobtrusive engineering style that captures the performers in realistic space rather than overwhelming them with studio effects. Bis, a renowned independent classical label founded in Sweden, has built its name on complete cycles, meticulously researched programming and a strong commitment to less-recorded repertoire. Over the decades, the label has become a reference for collectors seeking both artistic integrity and top-tier sound quality, often championing artists and works that fall outside the mainstream but reward patient, attentive listening. "Hidden Treasures" continues this philosophy by turning the spotlight on overlooked repertoire and presenting it with the same care and seriousness usually reserved for canonical masterpieces. | | | Manufacturer No.: |
