"First I would like to thank you for buying my newest album. As you can see and hear this album marks for me a different approach to my music. It represents my meeting with free jazz. Free jazz for me does not mean complete anarchy or disorganised sound. In my vocabulary disorganised sound still means noise. And donā??t forget that the definition of music is organised sound. Therefore in this album you will hear me playing rhythmically instead of soloing on chord changes. About the musicians playing with me: Isla Eckinger is really a fantastic bass man with ā??great big earsā?, meaning the ability to hear and respond to everything that happens in the music. Quoting Charles Mingus, ā??a cat that can hear like that could hear around cornersā?. Clarence Becton, our man on drums really knows how to take care of business. Just listen at the ever swinging feeling he gives me on all the moving type tunes. It was really a pleasure making this album and hoping that you receive as much pleasure as we did." - Recorded on November 24, 1969 at the Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg.

Tracks C1 - D2 previously unreleased."Free At Last (Extended Edition)" is a landmark LP by the Mal Waldron Trio, released under ECM Records. This extended edition revisits and expands upon the original 1969 album, which holds historical significance as ECM's very first release. The record features pianist Mal Waldron alongside Isla Eckinger on bass and Clarence Becton on drums, delivering an evocative blend of post-bop jazz with introspective improvisations and subtle interplay. The new edition includes additional tracks that further showcase the trio's dynamic range and creative synergy. ECM Records, founded in Munich in 1969 by Manfred Eicher, is renowned for its pristine sound quality and innovative approach to jazz and classical music production. Over decades, ECM has become synonymous with artistic excellence and has launched or nurtured countless influential musicians worldwide.
Mal Waldron was an American jazz pianist celebrated for his distinctive style marked by deep lyricism and rhythmic complexity. Having worked extensively with legends like Billie Holiday, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, and Jackie McLean before establishing himself as a prolific bandleader in Europe during the late 1960s onward, Waldron's career spans hundreds of recordings across genres from hard bop to avant-garde jazz. His work remains highly respected among critics for its emotional depth and inventive spirit. | | | Manufacturer No.: |
