Works By Terry Riley |

| Description: | The Kronos Quartet plays the sound of the universe:erry Riley's Sun Rings in the first complete recording. Unlikley that a NASA reports to the agent of a classical string quartet. Especially when it's about a creative musical proposa. But that's what happened around the year 2000: the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Voyager spacecraft. The NASA Arts program had created the idea of the "space sounds" sent from the probe back to Earth to do a musical work. - WORKS BY TERRY RILEYCommissioned by NASA for the Kronos Quartet and featuring pre-recorded sounds from the plasma around planets, Terry Riley's Sun Rings is about as close an experience to being in space as it is possible to be. The ten-movement 'spacescape', as Riley refers to it, is a multimedia work for quartet and chorus, opening with recorded audio of the static heard from radio emissions in space. These are all triggered by members of the quartet's hand movements over sensors.Sun Rings (2002) for string quartet, chorus and pre-recorded spacescapes |
