 | | Description: | In 1937, a Viennese antiquarian sells a comprehensive lute tablature, which then ends up in Lviv in today's Ukraine. For decades, the tablature is out of reach and subject to wild speculation. Today, it once again reveals European Renaissance masterpieces, presented here on this album. Bernhard Hofstötter's lute playing has been described as "adeptly combining technical ease with a masterful sense of phrasing" (Lute Society of America) and demonstrating "a refined rhythmic sensibility and understanding" (International Record Review). His recordings of the music of the 18th century lute virtuoso Silvius Leopold Weiss have been hailed as containing "some of the most sympathetic and beautiful Weiss-playing yet committed to disc" (Gramophone). To date, Hofstötter has published four solo albums which shine an imaginative and colorful light on the lesser known musical landscapes of the 17th and 18th centuries. His recordings have been met with international critical acclaim."Fantasia Bellisima - The Lviv Lute Tablature" on CD presents a finely crafted journey into the golden age of lute music, interpreted by the distinguished lutenist Bernhard Hofstötter. Drawing on the rich traditions preserved in the historical Lviv lute manuscripts, the album explores a colourful spectrum of Renaissance and early Baroque pieces, from intimate, introspective fantasies to elegantly flowing dances and song-based variations. The sound world is characterized by warm, resonant lute tones, meticulous ornamentation and a refined sense of phrasing that brings out both the lyrical grace and the intricate counterpoint of this repertoire. Hofstötter approaches these rarely heard works with scholarly care and artistic imagination, placing them in a coherent dramaturgical arc that makes the recording as engaging for early-music connoisseurs as for listeners discovering the lute for the first time. The recording quality is detailed yet natural, allowing the subtle nuances of touch, resonance and silence to unfold in a calm, almost meditative atmosphere. "Fantasia Bellisima - The Lviv Lute Tablature" is thus both an invitation to rediscover a largely unknown musical treasure and a contemplative listening experience that rewards repeated encounters.
Bernhard Hofstötter is an established specialist in historical plucked instruments, known for his stylistically informed interpretations and his focus on lesser-known sources and composers. Over the years he has built a strong reputation in the early-music scene through concert performances, teaching activities and carefully curated recordings that shed light on hidden corners of the lute repertoire. His work is characterized by an intelligent balance between historically informed practice and personal expressiveness, making complex music accessible without sacrificing depth. Previous recordings have been praised in the specialist press for their clarity of articulation, sensitivity of sound and research-based programming, which have helped to broaden the understanding of the lute's rich historical landscape.
