Das Konzert im Madison Square Garden ist über jeden Zweifel erhaben: eine Supergroup (wenn nicht DIE Supergroup?!) auf dem Höhepunkt der Karriere. Heraus aus dem Rhythm & Blues-Korsett in vollem kreativen Höhenflug-Anything Goes! 20min-Stücke? Kein Problem in den progressive Früh-Siebzigern! Endlose Improvisationen? So virtuos, immer! usw.usw. Wenn Musik ein Breitwandformat kennen würde, hier wären es die vollen 70mm in Technicolor. Aber nun der Film ... und nicht einfach ein Konzertfilm mit ein paar Szenen von hinter den Kulissen, sondern auch noch völlig wirre, quasi-biografische Minimovies zu jedem der Musiker und ihrem Manager, als Feature hinterlegt von längeren improvisierten Passagen in den Musikstücken des Konzerts. War das nötig? Wer den Film heute schaut, könnte schon des öfteren ins Jaulen kommen, in Zeiten der dynamischen politischen Korrektheit. Zu unverfroren wird von Anfang bis Ende auf die sprichwörtliche K**** gehauen. Wer den Film vor 45 Jahren gesehen hat, dem werden wohlige Schauer der Erinnerung an den oder die Kinobesuche den Rücken auf-und ablaufen, als man am Ende der Vorstellung die runtergefallene Kinnlade einsammelte und beseelt aus dem Lichtspieltheater schlich. Die Super Deluxe Ausgabe wird dem ursprünglichen Produkt mehr als gerecht und Over-The-Top ist nun mal nicht bodenständig ....
