Description:
UK live six CD set. Riot's story is one of what might have been, and to some degree, a band being (or not) in the right place at the right time. What this live collection does offer is unique, and often raw, insights into the growth and development of an influential hard rock and heavy metal band, as they graduated from small clubs in 1976 through to huge festivals in 1980. Riot formed in 1975, in New York City, when Kon-Tiki guitarist Mark Reale and drummer Peter Bitelli teamed up with bassist Phil Feit and vocalist Guy Speranza. Recording a four-track demo, they added Steve Costello on keyboards, and were subsequently picked up by New York producers Billy Arnell and Steve Loeb, who owned the independent label Fire-Sign Records. Signing to major label Capitol Records, this subsequently led to a UK tour in 1980 supporting Sammy Hagar (from where the Bristol show here was taken), and eventually a slot at the legendary Monsters of Rock Festival at Castle Donington the same year, on a bill featuring Saxon, Judas Priest, Scorpions and headlined by Rainbow. Mastered from tapes in the collection of the estate of founder member and guitarist Mark Reale, The Official Bootleg Box Set Volume 1 captures the band at their formative, early club stages in 1976, where much of their repertoire included songs by the bands that had influenced them, such as their covers on Montrose's 'I Got the Fire', 'Good Rockin' Tonight' and 'Rock Candy', to UFO's 'Shoot Shoot' and Deep Purple's 'Highway Star', included amongst Riot originals, 'Angel', 'Overdrive' and 'Tokyo Rose'. This set concludes with their aforementioned Castle Donington slot in 1980.
"The Official Bootleg Box Set Vol.1 (1976-1980)" on CD captures the raw, unpolished power of Riot's formative years and presents it in an extensive collection aimed at devoted fans of classic heavy metal and hard rock. Spanning the crucial period from 1976 to 1980, this box set documents the band's rise from an underground New York act to one of the most respected names of the early US metal scene. Live and bootleg-style recordings immerse the listener in the atmosphere of the late 70s club and tour circuit: rough mixes, direct soundboard captures and rare performance tapes that highlight Riot's relentless energy, tight musicianship and melodic yet aggressive songwriting. This set is designed for collectors, offering a comprehensive snapshot of a band on the verge of their early breakthrough years, with material that complements their landmark studio releases of that era and gives deeper insight into how their songs evolved on stage. The historical value is at least as important as the sound: you hear a young band testing limits, sharpening its identity and steadily building the foundations of a loyal fanbase.
Riot, formed in the mid-1970s in New York, became a cult favorite among heavy metal and hard rock fans thanks to their combination of speed, melody and streetwise intensity. The band is especially associated with the emerging wave of US metal that paralleled the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and over the years they have built a reputation for consistently strong songwriting and powerful live shows. Their early period is particularly cherished by connoisseurs of classic metal, and this box set focuses precisely on those formative years when Riot were carving out their unique sound and winning over audiences with high-energy performances and memorable guitar-driven anthems.
"The Official Bootleg Box Set Vol.1 (1976-1980)" is released by Cherry Red, an independent UK label renowned for its archival depth and carefully curated reissues in rock, punk, metal, pop and many other genres. Cherry Red has established itself as a go-to name for collectors, regularly unearthing rare tapes, live recordings and long-unavailable albums, and presenting them with attention to detail and respect for the artists' legacy. With this set, Cherry Red once again underlines its commitment to preserving rock history: assembling rare Riot recordings from a crucial era, packaging them together for fans and providing access to material that would otherwise remain scattered or hard to find.
