Description:
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the first ever UK individual CD release of a newly re-mastered edition of the 1971 album by legendary musicians John McLaughlin, John Surman, Karl Berger, Stu Martin & Dave Holland. The product of a recording session in New York City in 1970, "Where Fortune Smiles" is one of the milestone albums to be recorded at a time when the divisions between the worlds of jazz and rock were less defined and albums such as Bitches Brew by Miles Davis and the work of Tony Williams' Lifetime pointed a new direction in music. Originally released on Pye Records' "Progressive" imprint Dawn Records, Where Fortune Smiles was recorded fresh on the heels of John McLaughlin and Dave Holland's work with Miles Davis, John Surman's work with Mike Westbrook and The Trio (with Stu Martin) - original vinyl copies of the record now command large sums from collectors. This Esoteric Recordings edition has been newly re-mastered from the original Dawn master tapes and features an illustrated booklet which restores the original album artwork and insert and an essay by aficionado Sid Smith.
"Where Fortune Smiles - Remastered Edition" on CD brings together three key innovators of modern jazz and improvised music: guitarist John McLaughlin, reed player John Surman and vibraphonist/pianist Karl Berger. This remastered edition presents the album with refreshed, more transparent sound, allowing the intricate interplay and tonal nuances of the original sessions to emerge with new clarity. Expect an adventurous, forward-looking jazz recording that blends post-bop roots with free improvisation, European avant-garde sensibilities and a strong melodic instinct. Long, exploratory pieces, shifting rhythmic accents and intense musical dialogues between guitar, reeds and keyboards create a dynamic, sometimes fiery, sometimes intimate atmosphere that rewards concentrated listening.
Musically, "Where Fortune Smiles" is marked by virtuosic soloing and tight group interaction rather than commercial hooks. McLaughlin's agile, harmonically rich guitar lines weave around Surman's expressive saxophone and clarinet work, while Berger provides both percussive drive and delicate harmonic colour. The result is a timeless document of early jazz fusion and experimental jazz, ideal for collectors, jazz connoisseurs and fans of boundary-pushing 1970s sessions. The remastered CD format offers improved detail and presence compared to older editions, making this version particularly attractive for audiophiles and fans who wish to rediscover the album in optimal quality.
John McLaughlin is regarded as one of the most influential guitarists in modern jazz and fusion. Beyond his early work in the British jazz scene, he became world-famous as the leader of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and through collaborations with artists such as Miles Davis and other major jazz innovators, helping to define the sound of electric jazz-rock. John Surman has carved out a distinctive path as a leading European saxophonist and clarinettist, known for his work on the ECM label and for pushing the boundaries between jazz, folk and contemporary composition. Karl Berger is a respected vibraphonist, pianist, composer and educator, known for his involvement in the creative music scene and for his role in fostering innovative, improvised music. Together, they represent a powerful meeting of three individual voices at a pivotal moment in jazz history.
Cherry Red Records, the label behind this remastered edition, is an independent British company known for its deep catalogue work, reissues and carefully curated archival releases across rock, pop and alternative genres, as well as selected jazz titles. The label has built a strong reputation among collectors for well-researched booklets, thoughtful track selections and attention to audio quality. With "Where Fortune Smiles - Remastered Edition", Cherry Red once again demonstrates its commitment to making historically important recordings accessible to a new audience, preserving key works in high-quality editions that respect the original artistic vision.
This is an album that seeks with its ideas - a great team of musicians - maybe the sound of the album is not modern, but this album should be heard as the knowledge of young musicians who are in love with jazz music
