Description:Cornell 5/8/77 by Grateful Dead, released 4 May 2017. This version of Cornell 5/8/77 comes as a 3xCD in a(n) Digipak packaging. -
Three CD live archive release. Cornell 5/8/77 was recorded live directly from the soundboards by Betty Cantor-Jackson. After several years the master tapes were seemingly lost for good, but that all changed at the end of 2016. The lost tapes, or lost "Betty boards" as they are commonly known, finally made their way back home to The Grateful Dead vault, making it possible to officially bring the world this legendary show just in time for it's 40th Anniversary. The complete live show has been Plangentized by Plangent Processes and remastered by Grammy Award winning sound engineer, Jeffrey Norman.

"Cornell 5/8/77" on CD is a lovingly produced live release capturing one of the most celebrated concerts in Grateful Dead history, recorded at Barton Hall, Cornell University, on May 8, 1977. Long circulating among fans in unofficial form, this show has achieved near-mythic status for its crystal-clear interplay, flowing setlist, and inspired improvisations. Signature performances like the spacious, shimmering "Scarlet Begonias" into "Fire on the Mountain" and a deeply atmospheric "Morning Dew" showcase the band at a creative peak, blending tight musicianship with exploratory jams. Meticulous mastering and careful restoration bring new depth and presence to the tapes while preserving the organic, live-in-the-room feel that made this night legendary among Deadheads. Housed in a high-quality Rhino CD edition, this release is an essential document for both long-time fans and listeners discovering the Grateful Dead's 1970s live sound for the first time.

Grateful Dead, founded in the mid-1960s in California, became pioneers of the psychedelic and jam-band movement, known for their constantly changing setlists and extensive live improvisations. Over the decades, they built a devoted global fan community through relentless touring and landmark albums such as "Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty," as well as iconic songs like "Truckin'," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Ripple." Their live recordings--especially from the 1970s--are widely regarded as some of the most influential concert documents in rock history, and "Cornell 5/8/77" stands prominently among them as a definitive example of the band's on-stage magic.

Rhino, the manufacturer of this edition, is renowned for its archival expertise and audiophile-oriented catalog, specializing in carefully curated reissues, box sets, and special editions. With a strong focus on sound quality, historically accurate presentation, and detailed packaging, Rhino has become a trusted name for collectors and music lovers who value well-researched, respectfully produced releases that preserve important moments in music history.

Although the show is partially truncated to fit onto 3 discs, this collection is well worth the price and offers traction to both new fans and old. Highly recommended
