1978 New York & London Sessions
Description:
2016 two disc (CD + NTSC/Region 0 DVD) set. Pure Hell was a first-generation US punk band formed in Philadelphia in 1974 and active in New York City from 1974 to 1978. Contemporaries of the New York Dolls, their incendiary sound was inspired by The Stooges and the MC5. They were also the first-ever all-African-American punk band. This set includes a 30-minute live-in-the-studio DVD filmed for a New York cable TV station in 1978 that includes two non-album tracks.
"Noise Addiction: 1978 New York & London Sessions" is a CD that captures the raw, explosive energy of Pure Hell, one of the earliest and most visionary Black punk bands to emerge from the late-1970s underground. Recorded in New York and London in 1978, these sessions document a band operating at full intensity: distorted, fast and furious guitars, pounding rhythms and a wild, confrontational vocal delivery. The sound is unpolished in the best possible way - urgent, dangerous and immediate - and reflects the transition from early punk into a harsher, proto-hardcore aesthetic that would later influence countless scenes. This release is ideal for fans who want to explore the more obscure, radical edges of first-wave punk and experience the atmosphere of two of the most important cities in punk history at a crucial moment.
As an archival-minded label, Cherry Red is known for carefully curated reissues and deep catalogue excavations across punk, post-punk, new wave and many other genres. Over the decades, the label has built a reputation for giving overlooked or hard-to-find recordings a second life, often with improved sound and thoughtful packaging. A release like "Noise Addiction: 1978 New York & London Sessions" fits perfectly into that mission, allowing a new audience to discover historically important sessions that were long unavailable or under-represented in mainstream catalogs.
Pure Hell's significance lies not only in their sound, but also in their pioneering role within the punk movement. Emerging in the mid- to late-1970s, they pushed a fierce, street-level style that prefigured later hardcore punk, and they stood out visually and sonically in a scene that was still defining itself. Their recordings, including these 1978 sessions, have gained cult status among collectors and historians, who see the band as an essential missing link between the raw New York scene, the edgier side of UK punk and the heavier music that would follow. This CD offers a rare chance to hear that history in vivid, uncompromising form.
