Packaging: standard jewel case with 8 page foldout booklet"Houdini" on CD is a landmark album by the Melvins, released by Atlantic, that captures the band at a pivotal point where underground heaviness meets broader visibility. Fusing sludgy, down-tuned riffs, off-kilter rhythms and an abrasive yet strangely catchy sense of melody, this record became one of the group's most influential works of the 1990s. The songs move between crushing, slow-motion grooves and raw, punk-infused outbursts, always characterized by a thick, distorted guitar sound and a dark, sometimes surreal atmosphere. It's a dense, powerful listening experience that rewards both focused attention and repeat plays, making it essential for fans of heavy, experimental rock and metal.
Lyrically and sonically, "Houdini" reflects the Melvins' unique mix of irony, intensity and experimentation. Tracks range from bulldozing, riff-driven anthems to more twisted, noise-laden pieces, underlining the band's refusal to fit into a single category. The production emphasizes weight and presence, giving the drums a massive impact and letting the bass and guitar blend into a crushing wall of sound while still leaving room for subtler details. As a CD edition, the album offers clear, dynamic sound that highlights both the sheer heaviness and the unconventional structures that have made "Houdini" so enduring.
The Melvins are a highly influential American band widely regarded as pioneers of sludge metal and an essential influence on grunge and alternative metal. Formed in the early 1980s, they became known for their slow tempos, thick guitar tones and experimental song structures that stood in contrast to the faster hardcore punk of their era. Their work had a profound impact on bands from the Seattle scene and beyond, and "Houdini" is often cited as one of their standout achievements from their major-label period. Across their long career, the Melvins have built a reputation for constant reinvention, numerous collaborations and a discography that has inspired generations of heavy music artists.
Atlantic is one of the most important labels in modern music history, with a long tradition of supporting innovative and genre-defining artists. Igor G. - 30/Aug/2017 “Houdini” is considered as MELVINS' commercially biggest album. Released in 1993 by Atlantic Records, it was the band’s fifth studio album and the first one for the major record-company. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana was given co-production credit on some tracks, for guitar on “Sky Pup”, and percussion on “Spread Eagle Beagle”. Musically, the album presented quite an accessible take of Sludge, Doom Metal, and Grunge sounds, not without experimental weirdness and sophisticated sense of humor. In fact, the major-label deal didn’t water MELVINS down though pushed them up for clearer and punchier sound. The album featured several big songs by King Buzzo and Co. – like “Hooch”, “Lizzy” or “Honey Bucket” – and not to forget an excellent cover of the 1974 song “Goin' Blind” by Kiss. Arguably, “Houdini” is one of the most representative Melvins’ album which captured both the band’s power, mastery, and strangeness. It’s a good starting point, and undisputed must have for any lover of the ‘90s heavy music.
