Description:Der Rosenkavalier is one of Strauss' best known operas. Set in Vienna during the early years of the Empress Maria Theresa's reign, the work takes the form of a comedy in 3 acts, set to an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It bears a strong resemblance in terms of plot to Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro and is written in a different vein to Strauss's preceding avant-gardist creations, something the composer, appearing to have succumbed to popular taste, was heavily criticized for.

This high-quality CD edition of "Der Rosenkavalier" presents Richard Strauss' luxuriant, waltz-infused opera in an interpretation by the renowned Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. With its blend of late-Romantic richness, subtle chamber-like transparency and vivid theatrical flair, this recording captures both the nostalgic elegance and the bittersweet humour of Hofmannsthal's and Strauss' masterpiece. From the shimmering prelude and the opulent ball scenes to the intimate, heart-rending final trio, the orchestra offers a nuanced sound palette that brings out the score's many colours and emotional layers. The clear, well-balanced CD production allows listeners to appreciate the fine gradations of dynamics and the detailed interplay between the sections of the orchestra, making this release an ideal choice both for newcomers to Strauss' opera and for seasoned collectors who value interpretative depth.

The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in the early 20th century, has developed into one of Europe's leading symphony orchestras, particularly acclaimed for its powerful, flexible sound and its strong tradition in 19th- and 20th-century repertoire. Over the decades, the orchestra has worked with many eminent conductors and soloists and built an impressive discography that ranges from core classics to ambitious, large-scale works. Its international tours and festival appearances have repeatedly highlighted its ability to combine precision and technical brilliance with an unmistakable warmth of tone, qualities that serve Strauss' opulent writing particularly well in this recording.

This CD is released by Brilliant Classics, a label known worldwide for its excellent value and its broad, often exploratory catalogue. Brilliant Classics has made a name for itself by offering thoughtfully curated recordings of both the great masterpieces and lesser-known repertoire, frequently in extensive edition box sets and complete cycles.
