 | | Description: | Chet Baker released Chet Is Back! in 1962. He was accompanied on the LP by a number of highly talented European players, among them two Belgian stars: tenor saxophonist, flutist and composer Bobby Jaspar, and guitarist René Thomas.
Matt Collar gave the LP a four-star rating in All Music Guide. Collar wrote â??Chet Is Back! Showcases the â??coolâ?? trumpeter cutting loose on such bop-oriented workouts as â??Pent-Up Houseâ?? and â??Well, You Neednâ??tâ??. One listen to â??Over the Rainbowâ?? and itâ??s clear this is an overlooked Baker classic.â?
The album is part of the Jean-Pierre Leloir 180 gram vinyl Collection, - UK reissue. Chet Baker made almost as many headlines for his drug habit as he did for his musical abilities, being sentenced to several spells in prison for various drug charges. In the summer of 1960 he was imprisoned for eighteen months in Italy, but on his release found the local RCA label was willing to get him back into a studio as quickly as possible! Assembling a number of up and coming musicians from Europe, including Amadeo Tommasi (piano), Rene Thomas (guitar), Benoit Quersin (bass), Daniel Humair (drums) and Bobby Jaspar (tenor saxophone and flute), CHET IS BACK was a more Bop orientated album than his earlier efforts. It has been suggested that Chet's drug addiction and with it the almost constant need for cash led him to accepting many recording offers that he might otherwise have been better off avoiding. Certainly, the sheer abundance of material he recorded is of varying quality, as one might expect. Fortunately, CHET IS BACK is one of the better albums he recorded, fully justifying the moniker 'overlooked Baker classic' it has been dubbed. No performance or production credits appear on this release.

Chet Baker, one of the central figures of West Coast and cool jazz, became famous in the 1950s for his uniquely lyrical trumpet playing and his intimate, fragile singing voice. Often described as the "James Dean of jazz" for his combination of looks and vulnerability, he rose to prominence in the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and then as a bandleader in his own right. With hits such as "My Funny Valentine" and acclaimed albums like "Chet Baker Sings," he left a profound mark on the sound of modern jazz. "Chet Is Back!" documents a crucial comeback phase: Baker plays here with renewed focus and technical control, reminding listeners why he is considered one of the most distinctive trumpet stylists in jazz history.
Whether as a highlight in a serious jazz collection or as a first encounter with Chet Baker's artistry, this Hallmark CD of "Chet Is Back!" offers a concentrated dose of his melodic genius, emotional expressiveness and understated virtuosity--a compelling portrait of an artist reclaiming his place in the jazz pantheon. | | | No. of tracks: |
