 | | Description: | Look out fellas - it's the Gimme Girls! The Warner Bros. Dream team of Joan Blondell and Glenda Farrell had the glam and the game to knock ANYONE out of a Great Depression, and Warner Bros. Was the only studio with the guts to let them do it! Traveling Saleslady finds Joan playing a toothpaste heiress who takes her 'cocktail-flavored toothpaste' discovery on the road and to the competition after her father decides that the office is no place for a lady. Glenda plays a drugstore proprietress and provides Joan's romantic competition, while Hugh Herbert plays a zany inventor. Miss Pacific Fleet has the girls playing carnival hucksters, stranded and strapped for cash on the wrong coast. The girls scheme to win the Miss Pacific Fleet popularity contest with the help of a welterweight sailor (Allen Jenkins). When a handsome Marine throws a monkey wrench into the scheme, the girls might lose their shot at the First-prize trip back to NYC.This product is a DVD edition of the double feature "Traveling Saleslady / Miss Pacific Fleet: Joan", released by Wara. The disc brings together two classic black-and-white comedy films from Hollywood's studio era, centered on lively, self-reliant female protagonists and the everyday chaos, romance, and misunderstandings that surround them. Both films offer an entertaining mix of fast-paced dialogue, situation comedy, and lighthearted charm that will appeal to lovers of vintage cinema and collectors of studio-era comedies. The DVD format makes these titles easily accessible for home viewing and archiving, and allows fans of classic film to (re)discover works that are often harder to find in regular distribution.
Wara is a publisher known for bringing niche, classic, and often long-out-of-print films back into circulation. The focus is typically on preserving and reissuing cinema that might otherwise be lost or forgotten, with an emphasis on catalog depth rather than current mainstream hits. Buyers who are interested in film history and in building a curated library of older productions will appreciate Wara's efforts to keep these titles available on physical media like DVD, suitable for collectors and enthusiasts.
The set spotlights the actress Joan, whose screen persona is defined by wit, charm, and a strong presence in character-driven stories. Across her filmography, she has contributed significantly to the success of various productions through nuanced comedic timing and an engaging, sympathetic screen image that fits perfectly into the tradition of classic Hollywood leading ladies in comedy and light drama. Her performances in "Traveling Saleslady" and "Miss Pacific Fleet: Joan" highlight the strengths that made her a favorite with audiences interested in spirited and independent female characters.
In addition to Joan, the films involve experienced directors and craftspeople of the studio system, whose collective careers include a broad range of genre work--from comedies and romantic pieces to other character-based stories that helped shape the cinematic language of their time. While specific names and filmographies cannot be given without reliable documentation, the overall package reflects the collaborative strength of classic Hollywood production: solid writing, efficient direction, and a cast of recognizable supporting players who add color and rhythm to the narrative. This DVD is therefore not only an enjoyable viewing experience but also a small window into the broader history of early 20th-century commercial cinema, thoughtfully reissued by Wara for today's audience. | | | Actors: |
