 | | Description: | "Most of the great progressive underground bands of the '90s would not exist if it weren't for them." - Ben Weinman, lead guitarist & primary songwriter of The Dillinger Escape Plan. Was DAZZLING KILLMEN a hardcore band? A metal band? The worldâ??s gnarliest progressive-rock quartet? "Yes" is the easy answer, but only because it's easy to rewind through two decades of genre fragmentation to hear Dazzling Killmen's influence on any number of "math-metal," "prog-core" and similarly classified bands. At the time, however, this St. Louis quartet occupied a genre of one. When SKiN GRAFT released the Killmen's 1994 sophomore album, "Face of Collapse", that genre had its touchstone." - Excerpt from Aaron Burgess' liner notes "One of the best post-metal records ever made". - Fact Magazine "The band formed in the St. Louis, MO area, and forged its singular sound with almost no music scene support for such a fringy concept - technically impeccable playing enabling whiplash stop-starts that recalled John Zornâ??s Naked City more readily than any rock group one could name, cathartic and discordant guitar stabs, a jaw-dropping rhythm section, arrangements of baroque complexity, and a harrowing, overbearing, inescapable sense of pure dread". - Dangerous Minds Loud Life at Alternative Press magazine declared it the top album of the 90's based on the following criteria: 1) Avoidance of formula or clichĂ©. 2) Dexterity of rhythm section, 3) Quality of album's production values, 4) Lack of predictable lyrical subjects - Satan, Straightedge, Viking folklore, etc. "Sounds like Dave Bruebeck's Time Out played through Carcass' PA system." Remastered from the original analog tapes and packaged in a deluxe six panel Digipack with a 16 page booklet of liner notes, interviews and comics. Includes three non-LP bonus tracks. Collects every studio track recorded by the quartet version of the band. - On the initial pressing, the CD manufacturer inserted the CD booklet backwards! All copies in the United States were ripped open by hand, the booklets turned around and reshrinkwrapped. However copies shipped to Europe with the error."Face Of Collapse" is a groundbreaking CD by Dazzling Killmen, released by the independent label Skingraft. Often cited as a cornerstone of 1990s underground heavy music, this album fuses elements of math rock, noise rock, hardcore and avant-garde metal into a dense, abrasive and intricately structured sound. The songs are built around complex rhythms, dissonant guitar work and sudden dynamic shifts, creating an intense listening experience that rewards close attention. "Face Of Collapse" captures a raw, almost live energy while still showcasing meticulous composition, making it a key reference point for later experimental and extreme bands.
Thematically and atmospherically, the record exudes tension, urgency and a dark, urban mood. Long, evolving tracks sit alongside shorter, explosive pieces, giving the album a dramatic narrative flow from beginning to end. The precise interplay between drums, bass and guitar emphasizes the band's technical skill without sacrificing emotional impact. For listeners who appreciate challenging, boundary-pushing heavy music, this CD stands as a powerful, immersive document of an era when underground bands were redefining what aggression and complexity in rock could mean.
Dazzling Killmen were an influential American band associated with the early development of math rock and experimental hardcore. Active primarily in the early to mid-1990s, they became known for their angular riffs, odd time signatures and uncompromising intensity on stage and in the studio. Although their discography is relatively small, their work--especially "Face Of Collapse"--has earned lasting cult status and is frequently cited by musicians and critics as a key influence on later noise rock, post-hardcore and experimental metal acts.
The CD is released by Skingraft, a long-running independent label recognized for championing adventurous and genre-defying artists. Focused on the outer edges of rock, punk, noise and experimental music, Skingraft has built a reputation for discovering and supporting bands that push beyond conventional song structures and mainstream expectations. With releases like "Face Of Collapse," the label has contributed significantly to the visibility and preservation of the 1990s underground and continues to stand for artistic risk-taking and uncompromising creativity. | | | No. of tracks: |
